Your grade so far

87.1%

Based on 60% of the course that has been graded.

How weighted grades actually work

A syllabus does not average your scores. It buys them. Each category is allocated a slice of the course, and your score inside that category decides how much of the slice you keep.

grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

Dividing by the weight you have actually used — rather than by 100 — is what makes the number honest mid-semester. A final worth 40% that has not happened yet should not be counted as a zero, and it should not be counted as an A either.

Why this rarely matches your grade book

Blackboard shows a running total. Whether that total is weighted depends entirely on whether your instructor configured the weights, and plenty never do — the grade book then shows a flat average of every column, which can sit several points away from what the syllabus says you have earned.

It cuts both ways. A strong homework average inflates a flat mean when homework is only worth 10%; a rough midterm looks worse than it is when the midterm is worth 15% and the final is worth 40%. The only reliable answer comes from the syllabus weights, which is what this page asks you for.

A worked example

Homework 20% at 94, quizzes 15% at 88, midterm 25% at 81, and a final worth 40% that has not happened. Points earned so far: 18.8 + 13.2 + 20.25 = 52.25, out of the 60 weight-points that exist so far.

52.25 ÷ 60 = 87.1%. A flat average of 94, 88 and 81 would have said 87.7 — close here, but the gap widens fast as weights get more lopsided.

Common questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add those products together, then divide by the total weight used. A 92% on homework worth 20% contributes 18.4 points, not 92. Averaging the raw percentages instead is the single most common way students end up with a wrong idea of where they stand.

Why is my Blackboard grade different from this one?

Usually because Blackboard is showing a running total over graded work only, while your syllabus weights categories that are not finished yet — or because your instructor never entered the weights into the grade book at all. The syllabus is the contract; the grade book is a display of it. When the two disagree, the syllabus wins.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

That is normal mid-semester, when some categories have no grades in them yet. This calculator divides by the weight you have actually entered, so leaving out an unfinished category gives you your true standing so far rather than a score dragged down by work that does not exist yet.

How do I handle a dropped lowest quiz?

Work out the category average yourself with the lowest score removed, then enter that average as the category's score. The category weight does not change — only the average inside it does.
